Summary

As in previous years, we present to our Members a summary of the annual Exhibition of the American Newspaper Publishers Association (ANPA). The ANPA show provides not only the opportunity to take stock of the progress made in the development of newspaper production equipment within the past year, it gives a foretaste of what will be displayed a few months later, often as production units, at the IFRA EXPO. This year’s ANPA from June 8 to 12, in New Orleans, may make an exception to this rule. Indeed, of the two highlights, one, the so-called "slip-in" units for press conversions to other printing processes without changing folders, reelstands and frame structures, should find short term potential also in Europe while the other, pagination, will certainly take more than the few months between now and the IFRA EXPO to reach fruition. Whatever the individual appreciation of these two highlights may be, they attracted, along with the other exhibits, the interest of thousands of newspaper executives. ANPA was the largest in the show's 57-year history. More than 260,000 square feet in two exhibition halls nearly one-half mile apart were crowded with displays by more than 230 manufacturing and service organisations. This portends well for the IFRA CONGRESS + EXPO from September 30, through October 3, in Hamburg. In view of the fact that the strong international ties between the agencies rule out any possibility of individual agencies pursuing different policies in their respective countries with regard to the introduction of new services, an international group of experts was summoned to discuss the question put in the title of the Forum.
