Summary

Sending a digital file down a line of communication is no problem. If that file happens to be an advertisement and the sender is a client and the receiver is a newspaper the problems start. Many who have tried it come to the conclusion that transmitting artwork for newspaper advertising as digital files causes more headaches than benefits. This is certainly likely if such transmissions take place in an unstructured environment. Systems are available which do the job, but they are of a proprietary nature. Answering strong calls from the industry to come up with standards to allow platform independent transmission of newspaper advertising IFRA convened an international working group of experts to come up with a suitable recommendation. Its aim is to improve the accessibly of the newspaper as an advertisement medium by allowing clients to send their advertisements to newspapers irrespective of the systems which happen to be operating at the receiving end. Much thanks goes to all companies and individuals who participated in this effort.
